Find Your Aesthetic

It is pretty ironic how most people skip this step while designing a room even though it is one of the most important steps. As a result, they struggle to figure out what to do. You must find out the style or aesthetic you want to go for. It could be anything. All you need to do is to think about your likes and dislikes in the planning phase.

Some popular styles people choose nowadays are airy, cozy, warm, casual, peaceful, vibrant, lively, glam, etc. You need to find out which one of these do you expect your room to be. It should match your personality or the purpose of the room. You can even look for styles on the internet. It will broaden your perspective, and you might even find a style that you are looking for. Once you decide the style you want to go for, things get quite easy.

Analyze The Function Of The Room

Every room has a purpose. It fulfills a need. Whether the room is meeting its purpose or not depends mostly on how it is designed. So designing plays a vital role here. However, from an architect’s perspective, the room’s function is what shapes the designing process. So, make sure to identify the purpose of the room before you start planning, and the process will be much easier.

Let’s assume you are designing a room for your child. You would want to make it fun, colorful, well-ventilated, and comforting at the same time. On the other hand, if you are designing an office, making it fun or colorful wouldn’t be the first thing you want; you might want to make it a bit formal and less dramatic. Again, you wouldn’t want a kid’s room to be like that. There are many versatile pieces available, like plush area rugs. You can include them in any design.

So once you decide the purpose, you will be able to narrow down the list, and you’ll have a better idea of the direction you are going on. Another thing to keep in mind is not to overcrowd it. Otherwise, it might get chaotic. So it’s best to keep it simple.

This is how you can sort a lot of confusing things easily by analyzing the purpose of the room you are designing.

Make A Wish List

This is where things start to get really interesting. Now that you know which styles you are going for and have a clear idea of the purposes you need to fulfill, you can start brainstorming. Get on to the internet and fish for ideas. Search for the specific styles you are going for. You can even search on Pinterest. You’ll find great ideas there.

After you gather enough information, make a list. Now skim through the list and identify what you are leaning towards, particularly the color scheme you like the best. It’s best to follow a color scheme rather than picking random colors to make the room seem harmonized or unified.

There is a very high possibility that you won’t be able to include everything from your wish list without making the room chaotic. Keep that in mind while making a list. There is nothing wrong with including something you like on the list, but you need to know your priorities. Rank them in the most important to least important order. It will make it easier for you to eliminate anything if necessary.

Start Taking Measurements

If you don’t want to end up in massive trouble, don’t skip this step. If you don’t emphasize taking proper measurements of the space you are designing before you start shopping, you might end up with pieces that don’t even fit in the room. Even if they fit, they might take up a lot of space and hamper proper movement

So measure out the room precisely, and make a list of the pieces of furniture you would need to fit in. Then you would need to make a rough layout of how you might palace the furniture. Play around with it and make different options. You can easily do it with a freehand sketch.

However, if it is too difficult for you, there are quite a few websites that help you with the layout. You can make a 3D model of your room. This will help you get a better understanding of what the final outcome might look like. This might sound tricky, but it’s not. It’s mostly like designing a room on sims. You can find these websites easily if you search online.

Choosing Textile

You might think this is not something very important, or it won’t make much difference. But everything counts when you aim to design the perfect room. Textile plays a vital role in bringing the character to the room.  The different textures and finishes bring life to the room. They are the toughest to match the theme as well. So start your shopping with the textile.

While you are shopping, make sure to keep a few things in mind, like longevity, washability, and of course, the person who is going to use it.

Finishing Touches

By this time, you will be done choosing most of the things and have a clear plan with you. Before you complete the process, you take some time to add some finishing touches, like you could add a bold statement piece to your room; it would act as the main focal point of the room.

You can even add a few personal touches to the room. It would make the room more personalized.

Budget

After you are done designing the room, you need to estimate a rough budget to make sure the plan suits you. This is just to ensure you don’t run into problems in the middle of the process.

To Sum Up

Now that you have the perfect plan to bring your dream room to life, it’s time to bring it to reality. It might seem like it’s going nowhere at a few stages, but trust the process; it will come together.
