When should you call a plumber?
Many people hesitate to call a plumber because they think they can fix the problem on their own. Without the right skills, though, they could do some irreparable damage and would often spend more to replace what they broke.
This the main reason why you need licensed plumbers to overlook any renovation you’re doing to the plumbing system of your home. Spare yourselves the trouble, effort, and money. Here’s how to know when it’s the right time to call a plumber to your home.
- No Hot Water in the House
It’s normal to run out of hot water on the regular. It’s often a case of overusing it, causing the reserves to run out. If it takes longer than a day to refill, though, there may be a problem with your plumbing.
The water supply pipes running underneath your house may have become damaged. You’ll need to go underground to know where the damage is. Calling a professional right away is essential to keep yourself safe and prevent any further damages to the pipeline.
- Water Line Leaks
Standard houses come with a water meter to measure how much water you use. When you look at it, the meter moves around when someone in the house uses water. A good way to gauge whether you have a problem with leaks is to turn all faucets off and check your water meter.
If it moves, then there’s a leak somewhere in your water line. Calling a professional at this point is essential as these lines are often hidden from view and hard to access. Professional plumbers know what they’re doing and can minimize any damage to your house to get to these damaged lines.

- Defective Pressure Regulators
If you noticed a decrease in water pressure, it can be because you have a leak somewhere. It can also be because you have a defective pressure regulator.
To know when you need to call a plumber, the pressure shown should only be around 40-70 psi. A defective pressure regulator will cause your water pressure to become too low or high. High water pressures can be dangerous as they can wear down your water line and cause long-term damage.
- Bad Odors Coming from the Drain
If you smell sewage inside the house, it can be coming from the toilet and sink. This happens because all pipes lead to the main sewage line. Smells often come back to your home because of these factors.
- Clogged or broken sewer line
- Leaks on P-trap
- Loose water bowl
- Blocked vent pipe
Only professionals can fix this without any issue. They can even fix this problem for the entire neighborhood if others are experiencing it, too.
- Rusty or Dirty Water Coming Out
Plumbing pipes could last up to 20-100 years depending on the quality and type of material used. That said, you still need to replace them every 50 years or so because it becomes corroded and/or cracked over time.
This is another major incident when you should call a plumber because rusty/brownish water is a health hazard. You either have to find and mend the exact broken pipe or change the entire water supply line.
