Completed by João Tiago Aguiar Arquitectos in 2017, Ressano Garcia Apartment is a total refurbishment project of two apartments into one duplex. Located in Bairro Azul in Lisbon, Portugal, this refurbishment is a respect for the original compartmentalization which is kept as well as the existing decorative elements of the building.
Design
The existing decorative elements in this project include moldings, door frames, mosaics, friezes, and crown moldings. The dining room, living room, kitchen, and office are the social areas that placed on the lower level. The intervention core of the architect consists of the dining room and kitchen into one single space by placing robust metal profiles and with the demolition of the existing walls. These profiles are assumed by black painting to create a contrast with the white ceilings and making them a stunning element.
Rooms
The staircase inside is placed perpendicular to the apartment and also parallel to the kitchen to use the space of the former storage room. The staircase is open over the kitchen and it is forming the volume that has the appliances and kitchen cabinets. The kitchen island in the social area stands out as a strong presence element, linking the various ambiances. A back-lit wine rack is also designed over the wall on the left.
The bedrooms can be found on the first floor and a backing laundry/pantry is kept where the former kitchen was. The main bedroom in this project is transformed into a master suite with a bathroom in the marquise. A bbq, a flowerbed, and a cement bench is illuminated from below in the patio, designed and linked as a single piece.
