Are you finally ready to move out of that old startup building and make one that represents your company?

Are you a homeowner who doesn’t know the first thing about metal fabrication?

Don’t worry – we’ve got you covered! Read below to learn the basics of metal fabrication and where to find the best fabricator!

What is Metal Fabrication?

Metal fabrication refers not to one thing, but rather multiple different processes. Put simply, metal fabrication is the production of metal structures by different processes like casting and welding.

Metal fabrication is generally used for company buildings and home improvements.

If you wondering what materials you can use so you can secure the best look possible, wonder no more. Metal fabricating generally utilizes common and popular metals such as:

  • Copper
  • Gold
  • Iron
  • Silver
  • Titanium
  • Magnesium
  • Steel
  • Aluminum
  • Brass

The materials don’t stop there,  but these are the most common.

Common Types of Metal Fabrication

Each type of metal fabrication depends on the starting metal material as well as the end product. Listed below are some of the most common types of metal fabrication.

Casting

Casting is a common metal fabricating process you’re familiar with. The preferred molten material is poured into a mold and then hardened into the final shape.

Casting can be used for numerous things and isn’t that difficult. Some people cast things in their own backyards!

Casting however may not be the method you’re looking for.

Forging

Forging is also fairly common and it yields more results than casting. The forging process is usually done by hammering a heated metal piece into the desired shape.

This lets you get some more complex shapes that can’t be pulled off with a mold.

Welding

Another one you’ve likely heard of! Welding is when you join at least two pieces of metal together.

This is often shown in movies and can be done at home with simple things.

Welding, however, can be used on very large structures and has four common methods.

Other Common Methods

Those were just three of the most common methods to give you an idea of what you’re going for. The following are even more frequent types of the fabrication process:

  • Cutting
  • Drawing
  • Forging
  • Extrusion
  • Machining
  • Punching
  • Shearing
  • Stamping

How Do I Go About Picking a Fabricator?

Now, to get your needs met to the best quality, you obviously want the best fabricator. The question is: where do you start?

Aside from obvious criteria like a company’s experience and customer reviews, a lot goes into the search.

You need to make sure companies are using up-to-date technology so you get the best result and you also want to make sure they’re in your area.

You can find a good starting point at the following site to learn more.

Picking the Fabricator That’s Right for You

With metal fabrication, it all comes down to you picking the best and the right metal fabricator for you.

Whether it’s for your company or for your home, create criteria that fit your needs and find a fabricator tailored to you.

  1. I had no idea that casting is pretty easy and that some people even do it in their own backyards. One day that would be a fun goal to achieve. However, for now, I think I’ll trust a professional to cast some metal for me.

  2. In a general framework, there are four different types of metal fabrication processes: welding, tig and arc welding, electroplating and direct metal manufacturing (DML). In order to understand that among these types of fabrication is suitable for your needs, you need to first understand the types of metals that can be fabricated by these methods. There are three main categories of metals in the welding and metal spinning processes: Aluminium, Steel, and Nickel Metal. By considering the properties of each of these types of metal, you will be able to better understand what type of metal fabricator would be best suited for your project. Here are some considerations for choosing a fabricator for your metal fabrication projects. Arc Welding. This common metal fabrication process happens when two or more metallic pieces are joined using the application of high voltage, high pressure, and high heat without the use of a torch in the welding process. The common types of welded metals that can be Arc Welded include aluminium, copper, brass, stainless steel, tin, zinc, tin, steel, and thermoplastic alloys.
