Completed in 2011, Tower Studio is a design project of a series of six artists’ studios situated dramatically on a stretch of rocky coastline in Shoal Bay, Fogo Island, Newfoundland with 50 m2 in size. Shorefast Foundation and the Fogo Island Arts Corporation ask Saunders Architecture to design these studios to preserving the Islanders’ traditions located on various Fogo Island locations.
Design
Located on various Fogo Island locations, the studios are designed with a unique and futuristic style. Just like its name, the studio looks like a tower that stands tall on the island. Its unusual form that comes from the sloping wall and flat roof can attract all eyes who see it from the distance. It is dark from the outside but bright and soft from the inside with its white surface.
Goal
Through this project, Shorefast Foundation and the Fogo Island Arts Corporation aims at rejuvenating the island through the culture and arts and also preserving the Islanders’ traditions as well. The studio building can be a symbol of arts, introducing the beauty of arts with its unique and futuristic design.
