Minimalism is the Key to Yielding a Modern Kitchen

The kitchen: it’s the centre of the home, the one room where everyone congregates at various times during the day.  The kitchen is the heart of your home, it’s where most of the work goes on, and it needs to be a comfortable and practical place to be in. If you’re looking at updating your kitchen, we have some ideas that might inspire you.

We are looking at the modern kitchen. What do we mean by this? Take a look at current kitchen appliance designs and you’ll see there is a theme: everything is clean, sleek and uncluttered. That’s what a modern kitchen is all about, but you might be surprised to learn that it is not a new idea. In fact, the minimalist, modern kitchen came about in the first half of the 20th century, when such design concepts were born.

How do you ally the minimalist concept to your kitchen? We’re about to give you some tips, but if you want you can see more ideas here and get some inspiration for your new kitchen.

What is Minimalism?

There is an old adage that says ‘less is more’; if you think about it, that’s quite a wise statement. Let’s try something here – have a look around your kitchen now, and count the objects in view that don’t need to be there. Then, count the appliances and equipment you never use. How many cupboards do you have? What is cluttering up your work surfaces?

Minimalism is about making sure you have what you need, and about de-cluttering. It can be applied to any room in the home, but is probably most effective in the kitchen. To achieve the minimalist, modern effect, you need to get rid of all that you do not need – that’s everything that is simply not necessary – and leave only what is used. It’s a great concept, and will leave you with a very tidy home!

There is another type of modern kitchen that we also need to mention, and it’s one that is very much in vogue right now: this is the ‘mid-century modern’, and it’s an updated take on the minimalist theme.

What is Mid-Century Modern?

The mid-century theme takes its cues from modernism and minimalism, and as the name suggests, has its origins in the middle of the 20th century. Back then, designers began using new materials that were new to the market.

This included the likes of plexiglass – a tough and durable material that is very effective in modern kitchens – plus plastic and vinyl. Plywood became a popular choice in modern design around this time, too, thanks to its versatility and affordability, and these materials – plus many others – are often utilised in modern kitchen design.

Of course, you may be reading this and wondering whether such materials would look good in your kitchen. The simple fact is, with the clean, sleek and simple elements of modern design, the look you will end up with is one that will actually be completely timeless and of the moment, especially if you use a professional service provider to get the best results.

Modern kitchens offer a pleasant, practical and easy place to cook and eat, and as your family uses the kitchen more than any other room in the house, this sort of design will lend itself very well to your home. Have  closer look at some examples of the minimalist, modern style – as well as mid-century modern – and perhaps you’ll find something that takes your eye, and we hope that we have inspired you to have the kitchen you really want.
