The Berkeley West Biocenter is a lab facility to conduct research on synthetic biology, cancer, quantitative biology as well as cell and molecular biology. Established by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and UC Berkeley in Berkeley, California, the lab has gone through some renovations to allow the research groups to move in quickly and build the future in the process.
The renovation project was handled by RMW Architecture & Interiors for three of the Biocenter’s suites. The plans included detailed programming with scientific end-users, field verification of available systems, new laboratory casework, relocation of major equipment, and the installation of additional utility infrastructure to accommodate research work.
The team finished the design and construction for each suite approximately within six months. They took advantage of visualization software that delivered the design of the renovated spaces to the end users. The software also helped illustrate the placement of lab equipment, open benches, and support rooms.
