HIBINOSEKKEI + Youji no Shiro was in charge of developing a new face for a childcare facility in Saitama, Japan. Called SKW Kindergarten, the facility displays the use of natural material to encourage children’s sensibility. SKW Kindergarten has more than 40 years of history so it was important for the firm to carry out the reconstruction without totally banishing its historical value.
In light of materials, the team from HIBINOSEKKEI + Youji no Shiro used one that are not artificial, including bricks and woods. The bricks are exposed in the atelier and some parts in the dining space. The dining space is quite open to the outside view with industrial-style light fixture hanging on the ceiling. Passing through the atelier, the children will arrive at the terrace area where they can play with their peers or simply read books.
