Atelier Archmixing, Shanghai-based architectural firm, involved in a façade renovation project for No. 8 Building. Located in Xuhui District, Shanghai, the 230 m square building has a new and unique façade that appears different depending on the time of day. Meanwhile, the firm started the renovation project in 2012 and finished it in 2014.
The Facade Project
No. 8 Building is located in a downtown commercial center, at the corner of two leafy historical roads. It houses old villa, office, and future boutique shop.
With the façade renovation, the building is now clad in two different textures; traditional gray bricks and luminous bricks.
The Luminous Bricks
Both the traditional gray bricks and luminous ones share the same quiet appearance during the day.
However, when the sun goes down, the luminous bricks appear shining, displaying a dramatic experience altogether.
No wonder that pedestrians are deeply attracted to the façade.
The Tectonic Details
The current building façade brings out the tectonic details that carefully designed to establish a coherent face with different expression depending on the time.
The firm admitted that the change of tectonics and materials were necessary to achieve different appearance for this historical and commercial building.
