In response to Thailand’s monsoon climate, with its alternating challenges of floods and droughts, a unique design solution was developed. The concept utilizes a sponge-like system that captures excess rainwater during the wet season and gradually releases it during dry periods. Additionally, urban sewage from a nearby canal is naturally filtered through native aquatic plants, improving water quality. Drawing on traditional Thai agricultural practices, furrow irrigation is employed to raise tree roots above flood levels and ensure proper drainage.

Benjakitti Park, situated on the site of a former tobacco factory in Bangkok, exemplifies these sustainable strategies. It not only enhances public awareness of hydrology, ecology, and sustainability but also serves as a pioneering model for urban ecological parks. By fostering biodiversity and creating a green sanctuary, it supports both local communities and the city’s ecosystem.

It is an awesome project designed by Arsomsilp and Turenscape for The Treasury Department (Ministry of Finance).
