A house can be a never-ending project that necessitates constant upkeep. Maintaining a house can be stressful and difficult, from dealing with problems like a clogged toilet or leaking faucet to dealing with electrical issues that a typical residential house faces every day. Being able to take care of things around the house not only saves you money, but it also gives you an inner sense of liberation and accomplishment because you realize how much you can do on your own rather than relying on others to do the work for you.

Because failing to maintain a home can result in serious repercussions, it is necessary to perform the necessary home maintenance tasks in order to guarantee that a home is operational and in good working order at all times. On that note, here are 6 simple home repair hacks you need to know.

1. Painting

A little paint goes a long way when it comes to retouching a painting. Anyone should be able to successfully repaint smudges, marks, and blemishes on a wall. It is preferable to retouch surfaces with leftover paint from the one used originally so that your walls and surfaces will blend in perfectly. You can go to the store for a fresh coat of paint if you did not keep the previous paint or if it was exhausted. Obtain the exact brand, color, type, and luster so that the tone is consistent and no one notices that any area of the wall has been retouched.

2. DIY Drain Cleaning

When your toilet, faucet, or bathtub is clogged, try the following hacks before reaching out to a plumber. The methods listed below have been tried and tested to unclog a sink or drain:

  • Using a plunger
  • Pouring boiled water down the toilet or sink
  • Pour one bowl of baking soda and one to two cups of vinegar down the toilet. Give the materials enough time to work before you flush the drain with hot water.

You should call a plumber if none of these methods work or your drain continues to clog.

3. Using Potatoes to Remove Broken Light bulbs

Have you ever attempted to replace a broken light bulb? You have probably gone through it yourself and can attest to how challenging it is. Perhaps you even sustained an injury.  As any electrical engineer in Singapore will tell you, hiring a local professional is always your best bet. However, you can try using a potato and following the steps below if you want to give it a go yourself. These steps are quite easy to carry out yourself.

  • Use gloves and ensure that the power is off.
  • Cut the potatoes into two equal halves.
  • Pick any half and attach it to the broken bulb.
  • Turn it in an anticlockwise direction until all the glasses are in the potato.

4. Gutter Cleaning

At the very least once every six months, roof gutters should be cleaned out. Although this might not call for the assistance of a trained professional, you still need someone to assist you in firmly holding the ladder so that you can clean your roof gutters without putting yourself in danger of falling off it. You can remove all of the dirty particles and debris with your hand, a gutter shovel, or a hand trowel while the other person holds the ladder.

5. Changing a Faucet

Changing a faucet may appear difficult, but it isn’t at all! Select a new one with openings in similar positions as the previous one to enable correct alignment. Take photographs before starting so that you will not get confused while trying to assemble them again. If the water is running, turn it off and empty the faucet. You can then proceed according to the assembly guidelines.

6. Repairing Drywall

If you need to repair a large hole, you should hire a professional. A small or medium-sized hole, on the other hand, is a simple task. Purchase putty and use it to fill the hole. Allow it to dry before cleaning off the excess. Before painting, use sandpaper to smooth out the area and make it even with the rest of the wall.

In the case of nail holes, a bar of soap can be used to cover them up. In a circular motion, rub the soap all over the hole. Wipe away the soap residue with a warm and wet cloth.

Tools and Equipment Needed to Maintain the House

Putting in the extra effort to keep your home in good condition can help you avoid serious, long-term issues. Purchase a basic toolbox that includes the following items:

  • Paintbrushes
  • Hammer
  • Pliers
  • Wrench
  • Protective gloves

If you have the financial means to hire professionals to assist you with every issue that arises in the home, by all means, do so. But if you want to save money and be self-sufficient, you should begin addressing all of the minor issues around your house as soon as possible. These issues can be quickly resolved with the appropriate instruments, equipment, and a little bit of hard work on your part.
