Andrum is built by using some chosen materials like glass, wood, stone, and concrete. Those materials are kept in their form to create a natural touch to the building structure and interior look. By combining those materials, the architect can form a whole that brings a low-key and beautiful style to the building. The fabric of the building is upgrading fully including the green roofs, replacement triple glazed windows, Air Source Heat pump, external insulation, Solar Hot Array, MVHR unit, and solar tiles. By challenging the traditional layout of the house, the architect also uses the staircase to cut the building into some functional areas.
The architect has a new concept to breathe the new life into the whole floors of this house. This museum has a complex three-dimensional geometry from its concrete shell. It is shaped by the local worker’s hand in Qinhuangdao using a formwork made from wood small linear strips and other chosen materials. The architect also retains the imperfect and irregular texture of the formwork, allowing the building’s manual construction traces to be seen and felt clearly.
There are five gardens with different themes and sizes. Those gardens can be found at different locations and levels of around this townhouse that consist of a flower welcoming garden upfront, a linear ground bamboo garden, a rooftop vegetable garden, and a sunken play garden.
The architect cuts some existing building features such as decorative plasterwork, staircase, and roof into the joinery faces. In order to define the house unique characteristic, some materials like brick and wall are used as they are, without additional painting or more details. From the outside, Etch House looks like a total brick house but the modern interior will surprise everyone who visits it.
