The program of this 2017 project is a refurbishment of an apartment from the 70s. Located in Poznań, Poland, the interior of this apartment is transformed by Atelier Starzak Strebicki for the need of reorganizing space for a family of two adults and three children. Some particular rooms also change their functions and users for this goal.
Design
The need for reorganizing space allows all residents to spend time together as they like and as well as have their place. The biggest room in this apartment that was used as a place for a playing area, a study space, and family meetings is transformed into a children’s room.
There is also a common space that arranged in the kitchen with a dining room and a widened corridor, connecting all rooms in a perfect way. The remaining part of this apartment is dedicated to a study space and a master bedroom that enable the residents to be isolated from the busy activities of family life.
Materials
Making the floor uniform in the whole apartment is the first step of this project, lined with tiles and panels. Light ash boards are also used to give a sense of coziness. For the playing area, the architect uses some friendly materials for the three children of the family. One of the walls in the girl’s room is covered by built-in bed units while another one by a large wardrobe just like in the master bedroom.
The design of built-in furniture can separate three sleeping zones on different levels. Each bed has a night light and a shelf for books to create a comfortable corner that provides privacy in the shared room. The furniture is concurrently drawers, invisible shelves, and also a storage space for all of the children’s treasures.
The traditional door leaf is replaced with sliding panels that veneered with ash wood in the same color as the room’s furniture. The apartment space in the middle of the room is left unfurnished that to be fulfilled by girls’ imagination and play.
