Berkley House: A Contemporary Home with Californian-Style Atmosphere and Energy-Efficient Heating Systems

Berkley House 2

Located in North Vancouver BC, Canada, Berkley House is a 2019 project of a mid-century interior renovation by RSAAW. It was a tired inefficient house with some good bones, transformed into a contemporary home. The family of the house wants to enhance and preserve the Californian-style atmosphere. The energy-efficient heating systems are also used to deliver an energy-efficient house.

This two-level home has a Californian-style atmosphere and an ability to adapt to the Canadian climate. The architect completes this design by installing triple glazing throughout, replacing all insulation, and also using the energy-efficient heating systems.

Throughout the main floor, the sense of the house space is augmented by vaulting the ceilings. The skylights and oversized glazing units are also added to provide the family stunning views of the North Vancouver greenery in the garden. This home is also filled with light even on overcast days, offering a bright atmosphere each day.

A children’s paradise with ample storage space can be designed by transforming the previously inaccessible attic space. The new atrium space is anchored by a monumental double-height bookcase, opening up the two main floors of the house. The circulation is improved at the lower level by creating a hallway and taking out the former mechanical room.

This new hallway allows an easy fluid access to all areas. The family can enter the house after outdoor activities without any worries thanks to the resilient tile flooring downstairs. While the streamlined cabinetry, shadow-line walls, and threshold-free light oak flooring strengthen the upstairs the sense of light, warmth, and space.
