Planar House: A Large House with A Green Roof and Elegant Proportions of Miesian Architecture

The interior and architecture design for this large house is designed by Studio MK27. Planar House is a 2018 completed project located in Porto Feliz, Sao Paulo, Brazil. It has a flat green roof that contributes to the thermal comfort in the house and elegant proportions of Miesian architecture that come from the cross-shaped metallic pillars.

Rooftop

This house project is a radical exercise in horizontality, a common aspect explored in the studio projects. Favoring the existing topography and inserted in the plot highest point, the house presence is strongly felt in the footprint rather than volumetrically. It is an insertion that demands care and attention with the design of the rooftop. The rooftop is the fifth facade, a green roof that contributes to the thermal comfort in the house.

Architecture

The slab is a rigid platform structurally which is not supported by beams but by the pillars directly, distributed modularly in three axes. The homage to the elegant proportions of Miesian architecture comes from the cross-shaped metallic pillars. There are two programmatic boxes under the roof. The first one with playrooms, TV, gym, and service areas while the second one with the five en-suite bedrooms.

Interiors

The living rooms at the extremities can be opened or closed completely by the sliding glass doors, transforming the entire house area into a terrace. The interiors of this house are made of solid and low furniture with enough spaces from the layout for free circulation between the panels and furniture, allowing for an individualized reading of each piece. From the slab, a translucent multi-colored club-chair is hanging and it becomes the focus of attention.

Materials

A vertical winding wall surrounds the rigid formal distribution. This wall is made of solid bricks arranged in voids and solids. It defines the different relationships between the external and internal spaces paradoxically. In this project, the wall is at other convex and at times concave that creating transparencies and embracing the entrance garden. The brick texture creates light filters with kinetic effects and contributes to the cozy atmosphere.
