Assembly Design Studio was in charge of transforming a new workspace owned by Quid Offices. The project took place in California, San Francisco and finalized in 2016. In this project, the design team wanted to reflect Quid’s love of words and data with the appreciation of books and patterns. They wanted to evoke a response to read, collaborate, and research. They also wanted to convey the company’s desire to connect people to the world’s collective intelligence.
Assembly incorporated the blackened walnut and brass shelves that span the length of the lobby, referred to the books lining the walls of a library. The shelves contain books, diagrammatic patterns and drawings, and antique scientific tools.
These combinations allow us to see how the design team made an effort to add a touch of vintage amidst the groundbreaking and revolutionary that affects how the world functions today.
Regardless of the limited budget on restraints on construction, Assembly had managed to design a 3D sculpture made of Styrofoam and wooden dowels. It hangs over a simple, custom birch plywood 30’ table. It also implies connecting nodes and pathway resembles a network of information.
In regards to the idea of a network of information, they went with a dark and moody tunnel that makes a contrast to the open and light workspaces beyond.
