SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory Research Support Building is a light-filled, modern office building housing SLAC’s Accelerator Directorate and Department of Energy staff. Designed by RMW Architecture & Interiors in Menlo Park, California, the office adopts SLAC’s ‘One Lab’ concept which helped the architecture firm to develop a proper office design for the research department.
In light of the project, RMW aimed to establish a work environment offering interaction and collaboration at every level of this new 65,000-square-foot building. Acting as the central to the design, a soaring three-story atrium invites natural light into the building’s core as well as provides more opportunities for interdepartmental interaction spontaneously.
Each landing is surrounded by break rooms, open workstations, and conference rooms. This conjunction of gathering space and circulation animates the whole space in return. The high-performance design of the Research Support Building will serve SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory even for the next generations. It also was designed to LEED Gold specifications.
