Mecanoo was appointed to build the new headquarters for Eurojust, the EU-judicial cooperation unit handling cross-border crime. The headquarters is located in the International Zone of The Hague, Netherlands. The building was developed together with the Central Government Real Estate Agency, the Ministry of Justice and Security, and the municipality. Due to the complexity of the location, a thoroughly integrated design solution was required in the project.
Eurojust (EU Agency)
Eurojust [EU Agency] is a building with an elegant composition consisted of two volumes. The first volume is a high-rise tower facing the Johan de Wittlaan while the second volume is a low-rise plinth established on the park side.
The building has a timeless and classic beauty thanks to the rhythm of pure white composite façade elements incorporated into the design.
Subtly titled either vertically or horizontally, the windows reflect both the surrounding landscape and The Hague skyscape.
For the light façade, the firm used an alternating rhythm of closed and open composite elements, offering a modern yet timeless appearance.
A Spacious Double-Height Lobby
Upon entering the building, visitors will be welcomed into a spacious, double height lobby. A wide staircase overlooks the dune landscape and will lead the visitors to the conference center.
The lobby also acts as a starting point to a gradual transition from open spaces to more private areas.
The conference room has a modern flair that is in line with the overall building design.
The higher levels house a contemporary office environment. With such work environment, the employees and staff will feel encouraged to build cooperation with their peers.
The Adjacent Sloping Garden
The architecture firm took advantage of the fact that Eurojust is connected to the International Zone by an undulating dune landscape. The dune landscape comes with wildflowers and grassy vegetation. By incorporating the dune landscape, the building has an identity and open character that is easily recognized as a public space while still connecting to the various international organizations.
Meanwhile, Mecanoo worked with DS Landschapsarchitecten to design the dune landscape. Within the landscape design, the firm was able to integrate proper security requirements.
