Gantry Plaza State Park was developed by SWA Group in the Hunter’s Point shoreline which was deteriorated over the course of time. The project was focused on the site’s landscape architecture and urban design.
Taking advantage of the site’s Post-Industrial Age vibe and spectacular views, Gantry Plaza State Park emerges in Long Island City, New York, as a place that celebrates its past, future, skyline views and the river envisioned by Thomas Balsley Associates and Weintraub di Domenico.
Gantry Plaza State Park
Gantry Plaza State Park has an area called the Promontory, known for its great lawn with a natural shoreline edge that makes use of the Manhattan skyline.
Move to the north side, the skyline is framed by restored gantries or gigantic structures that previously used to transfer railcars onto rail barges.
When you want to watch the 4th of July fireworks, the plaza offers accommodating spaces, such as game tables, tree-shaded cafés, and a fog fountain, for 30,000 viewers.
On the south, there is South Gantry Interpretive Garden dedicated to a contemplative space. The garden space is actually formed by two paths. The stepping-stone blocks offer direct access to the water for the visitors.
Encourage Passive Activities
The Peninsula Park in the Gantry Plaza offers a great lawn promontory intact with a natural shoreline edge.
The line of willow trees and natural grasses enhance the view as well as encourage a wide variety of passive activities.
The Peninsula Park was designed with a diverse shoreline, inspired by the residential neighborhood, with light industrial/blue collar.
This space also helps to recover a once-divided community with its strong sense of neighborhood pride and spirit.
Even the park protector alliance called the Friends of Gantry Plaza State Park testifies to the power of this place.
