Mecanoo was appointed to design a café in which it becomes an integral part of Taekwang Country Club, a 36-hole golf course in Gyeonggi-do, South Korea.  The café has two levels and is nestled on a steep hill, playing the part as a visual point of reference on the course. In this project, the firm intended to design a café that responses to the mountainous Korean landscape and local vegetation, blending well with its environment.

Anyone who comes to the Taekwang Country Club will be able to see the different views of the café across the golf course, despite the fact that said café is not totally visible. The café still blends well with the course as well as the landscape and existing vegetation.

The café has an expressive oversized black steel roof, displaying a distinct pattern of interlocking circles. The design helps produce a generous all-sided canopy.

The architecture firm also included voids in the roof to allow trees to extend above the building while filtering the daylight at the same time. This makes the café to establish a peaceful and calm atmosphere inside.

A Visual Coherent Approach

The café creates a visual coherent approach to the pattern of the roof and the voids as you can see through the front area of the café.

The same visual coherent approach also exists inside with the continuation of circle pattern on the café’s ceiling. As for the overall interior, the café offers an elegant and comfortable space for the member to relax and enjoy a cup of coffee/light meal while waiting for the caddies to take them to the course. When they finished playing, they can use the café as their resting point.

Meanwhile, the oversized windows in the café provide the views over the golf course and its surrounding environment. It makes the café as the important part of the sporting experience.
