Aluminum Lobby: An Environmental-Friendly Lobby with Futuristic Design

The Aluminum Lobby is another SOHO China project finished by AIM Architecture in August 2014. The lobby is a part of Fuxing Plaza which is located in Shanghai, China. Designed on a 1200m2 area, AIM offered an environment-friendly solution by proposing to use a recycled material like aluminum. This material was incorporated into the lobby’s futuristic design.

The Aluminum Lobby

AIM Architecture intended to create a simple but rich shape that complemented the strong linearity of the building’s architecture. That can be achieved by using aluminum foam sheets. Another plus point is that the materials are environmental-friendly and can help the building to bring out futuristic design through new techniques and material solutions.

Recycled Material

The aluminum foam sheets were the main material used for the building. They were left raw without coating or painting which makes the appearance of small to medium pores is even more visible. The aluminum material had been through an air infusion process for acoustic purposes. The result was that the material transformed into a hard surface form that was light and foldable. On first sight, it appears smooth and even for the building’s walls and ceiling. However, upon closer inspection, the material presents a very rich texture that supports a lively interior surface.

Striking Contrast

The building offers a striking contrast through the raw material and the smooth and bright white space near the lobby lift, resulting in a mesmerizing contemporary architecture. It also presents a design with an aesthetic and beautiful balance.
