C.A.R.L: One of The Largest and Most Modern Lecture Hall Centers in Europe

Central Auditorium for Research and Learning (C.A.R.L) was designed by Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects. Located in Aachen, Germany, the building is known as one of the most modern and largest lecture hall centers across Europe. The architectural firm stated that the building design is a part of the major development strategy of RWTH Aachen University by adding 280,000 m2 of additional space to the campus. With the new addition, it is considered as one of the largest research campuses across the continent.

The Learning Center

The learning center is a new facility located at RWTH Aachen University. The facility provides 11 lecture halls, a break room with a café, and 11 lecture halls for more than 4,000 students. The building also provides a space for the storage, workspace, and physics collection.

Out of 11 lecture halls, there are two largest ones containing 1,000 and 800 seats in the new building where the meeting point of Central Campus and Campus West is located.

The building itself is complemented with two blocks merged by an airy and transparent glass atrium in a ziggurat pattern.

Humanistic Approach

The Central Auditorium for Research and Learning attempts to use a more holistic understanding of learning and science. The humanistic approach is symbolized by the human scale.

Informal Spaces

Aside from learning halls, the learning center also provides informal spaces in varying sizes, forming squares and terraces for knowledge sharing and social activities.
