Lerouy Restaurant: A Michelin-Starred Restaurant with An Innovative Interior

Lerouy Restaurant, a Michelin-starred restaurant, has reopened in a new location in Singapore. It is renowned for its dynamic show kitchen and the exquisite French cuisine of Chef Christophe Leroy. To earn a second Michelin star, Chef Christophe and interior designers Evgeniya Lazareva and Farhana Sudiro of Hot Design Folks Studio focused on an innovative interior concept in a new 220 sqm space.

Chef Christophe Lerouy’s unique culinary vision is reflected in his artistic cooking style, characterized by industrial design, minimalism, and electronic music accompaniment. “Our task was to reimagine the space and elevate it to a new level,” said interior designer Evgeniya Lazareva. The design concept emphasizes a clean, minimalist aesthetic with metal accents set against a calm background.

Lerouy Restaurant is renowned for its Carte Blanche menu, which is built around the “element of surprise.” This approach allows Chef Lerouy to create unique tasting menus driven by creativity and seasonal ingredients. The restaurant’s atmosphere aims to preserve an air of mystery, enhancing the Michelin-standard dining experience. The interior design incorporates a theatrical element proposed by interior designers, presenting features as if they were under spotlights.

To amplify the theatrical theme, the designers used curtains. Like those in a theater, the curtains maintain mystery when closed and reveal the magic of the space when opened. These curtains, similar to doors, help define and separate spaces. The designers manipulated the layout to close off and open up spaces alternately, creating a dynamic interplay of mystery and revelation. This concept is showcased by the entrance bar, which serves as a suspenseful prelude, guiding guests to the dining area.

The main room resembles a theater hall, with tables oriented towards the “stage”—the open kitchen—where guests can watch Chef Lerouy and his team at work. “We aimed to create a neutral yet warm atmosphere, adding a touch of glamor with velvet drapes, accent lighting, and custom-made furniture from natural marble and leather,” explains Evgeniya Lazareva.

Due to the typical long, narrow, windowless layout of Singapore’s shophouses, visually expanding the space was crucial. This was achieved with mirrors and bronze elements with a reflective finish, while the elongated layout was highlighted with straight lines. Technical challenges with the false ceiling led to a creative solution: a vaulted ceiling reminiscent of wine cellars from the chef’s childhood in France, creating a cellar-like ambiance for connoisseurs.

“Regarding furniture and finishes, our goal was to craft the perfect setting to highlight and enhance the chef’s culinary art,” explained the designers. Room finishes include a beige pearlescent effect and bronze wall panels arranged in a staggered pattern behind the open kitchen for a dynamic effect. The ceiling features beige travertine plaster, and the floor is covered with large-scale serene stone-look tiles.

At the far end of the space, there is a wine cellar, back-of-house kitchen, and restrooms. The restroom design mirrors the main area’s style, featuring warm beige tones and textured pebble walls. Bronze metallic accents on wall lamps, mirrors, and door handles, along with pearlescent finishes on the vanity, add a luxurious touch.

“The interior design serves as a backdrop for the show kitchen, ensuring that no single detail overshadows another. All elements blend harmoniously, forming a balanced composition, akin to Chef Christophe Lerouy’s dishes,” concluded Evgeniya Lazareva and Farhana Sudiro.
