Lone Pine: A Seamless Merger of Function and Form

Located in Teton Village, Wyoming, Lone Pine is a residential project designed by CLB Architects. The house sits on the Lone Pine compound, at the base of the Teton Range in a resort development at the edge of an open valley. It is a seamless merger of form and function that combines many unique elements and carefully considered details.

Lone Pine is an award-winning project that takes advantage of open spaces and view sheds. This house is oriented to screen neighboring structures and capitalize on awesome views of the surrounding mountain ranges and the adjacent ski resort.

The house is supported by two simple but bold agrarian volumes linked by a transparent connector and its architecture is conceived as abstractions of common ranch structures. This way satisfies a community design requirement for overhangs while maintaining simplicity and also creates depth in the elevations.

The function of the subtractions in the primary structures is to foster connections to the outdoors, manage the effect of light, and direct views. The architect also contrasts its dark, textured cedar shell with a light, smooth cedar underbelly for further emphasis.

The forms’ arrangement creates two defined outdoor courts. One provides a contemplative private garden inhabited by an arrangement of aspen trees while the other initiates a welcoming entry sequence.

Thanks to the generous roof projections that create covered patios and balconies, the interior living space can be extended to the outdoors. The siding transitions from a solid shell to a gapped screen adding texture, lightening the visual mass of the structures, and also creating interest with patterns of shadow and light.

Inside, a rich interior palette combines warm mahogany millwork, white oak flooring, rugged stone, and smooth plaster walls. Attention to design detail can be seen in artisanal moments such as a steel stair railing incorporating woven leather strapping, a delicately faceted steel fire screen, and a custom-crafted steel and leather entry door.
