Kotare Drive House is a two-storey home that has awesome views across the lake to Mount Aspiring National Park. It is a 2019 residential project by Condon Scott Architects located in Wanaka. With a natural palette of materials, this house blends well with its surrounding nature.
Design
Bedrooms and living spaces on the first-floor level are the best places in the house to enjoy the awesome outside views.
The design of this house is arranged as a floating volume balanced on a schist’s blade wall. This wall is the main entry point that leads one to the front door while the cantilevered upper floor offers shelter to the courtyard.
Materials
There is a natural palette of materials that can be found in this house such as vertical cedar, timber, stone, and concrete.
The stone and concrete are used to create a sense of solidity and mass in the house. Cedar is the main material that wraps the upper level where there is contrasting dark window joinery.
With the designed geometries of the elevations, the awesome outside views can be maximized from the home.
